Sun Damage Free Skin with these Healthy Edibles!

Spring is here and that clouds are starting to part. Here are 6 foods that can help save your skin from sun damage, according to Dr. Calapai the proclaimed "Stem Cell Guru". Follow him on Twitter for other health news.

Just as an unhealthy diet can have a negative effect on your skin and health, a healthy diet high in antioxidant-rich foods can help protect your body, even from the sun. Since antioxidants help reduce inflammation and free radicals, loading your diet with them will go a long way against sunburn and skin damage as a result of UV rays. We connected with Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O., a New York City Osteopathic Physician board certified in family and anti-aging medicine for his list of foods that help prevent sun damage.

To be clear, Dr. Calapai is not saying you should completely replace using daily use of sunscreen with food, but what you eat can offer additional protection for your skin. So if you’re looking for some ingestible sun protection, add these six sun-friendly foods to your next shopping list.

1. Berries & stone fruits
Strawberries, blueberries and cherries contain high levels of vitamin C, which can reduce free radical damage caused by exposure to UV radiation. Vitamin C also stimulates collagen production, important for skin’s youthful appearance. As a bonus, cherries contain melatonin, which protects skin from UV radiation and repairs sunburn damage.

2. Leafy greens
If it’s green and it’s got leaves, chances are it’s good for sun protection. According to one study, spinach, kale and swiss chard can reduce the risk of squamous cell skin cancer by 50%. Broccoli is also a good choice: it’s full of sulphoraphane, an antioxidant that helps your cells protect themselves against UV radiation.

Fresh herbs like parsley, basil, sage and rosemary are also packed with free radical-fighting, skin-protecting antioxidants. Not sure where to start? Check out our guide to cruciferous vegetables.

3. Red & orange produce
The antioxidant lycopene has been shown to protect the skin against sunburn and is at least twice as effective an antioxidant as betacarotene when it comes to blocking UV light. It also helps rid the body of free radicals. Chow down on tomatoes, papaya, guava, red bell peppers and pink grapefruit. Watermelon is an especially good choice: it contains 40% more lycopene than tomatoes.

4. Micro-algae
Spirulna has been dubbed “the next great superfood,” and for good reason. This micro-algea, along with chlorella, contains the antioxidant astaxanthin, which has been shown to protect the skin and eyes against UV radiation. It also fights free radicals and inflammation to prevent sun damage by preventing UV-induced cell damage.

If micro-algea isn’t exactly your cup of tea, you can find this powerful antioxidant in shrimp and salmon.

5. Chocolate
As long as it’s dark chocolate you’re eating, you’ll be ingesting plenty of flavanoids, which can improve your skin’s ability protect against sunburns and other UV-induced issues.

Research found that people who ate about one ounce of high-percentage dark chocolate every day for three months could withstand twice the amount of UVB rays before their skin started to turn red, compared to those who didn’t.

6. Green & black tea
The myriad health benefits of tea are well known, but it’s nice to know that the cups you’re drinking can also help protect against sun damage. Green and black teas are packed with polyphenols that can help stop cancer development by limiting the blood supply to the cancerous area. Green tea can even help prevent non-melanoma skin cancer by enhancing DNA repair.

Devera Naturals Review

About Devera Naturals
Devera Naturals is a woman-owned business created in 2008 by Linda Joffe as a result of a serious bout with breast cancer.  Linda is passionate about enhancing the beauty of every woman…naturally. Devera Naturals offers only those products that will benefit consumers according to the company’s uncompromisingly high standards, containing only natural and organic ingredients.

Devera Naturals functions to benefit their consumers, employees, community, and brand.
Their eco-friendly packaging comprised of recyclable glass containers and environmentally safe ink labels contribute to the sustainability of our community. A portion of the proceeds is donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation which helps provide mammograms and follow up care for disadvantaged women throughout the U.S.

I was sent two products from the Devera Naturals beauty skincare line, Snow Flower Creme and Miracle Eyes. The key ingredient in these and other Devera Natural products is a super flower called Edelweiss or known also as Snow Flower.

This flower is said to contain powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and science has found a way to use Edelweiss plant stem cells in skin care to help prevent collagen loss, firm skin, prevent sun damage and even minimize wrinkles. You can read more about the benefits of the Snow Flower and Devera Naturals on their blog post.

Now for my opinion...

Snow Flower Creme is an anti-aging cream that is meant to be used morning and night after cleansing your face. It contains the Edelweiss plant cells to help fight wrinkles as well as Goji Berry extract for soothing, lifting and firming. I have been using this product religiously for the last couple of months. I waited to write my review because one of the claims that is made about this product is that it can decrease wrinkles by up to 15% in 22 days. So I wanted to give it a fair try. I am soon to be out of my 30's and I have noticed that my skin is not as youthful as it once was. While I do not have noticeable wrinkles I have noticed that when I look very closely at my skin, it isn't as smooth as it used to be. Since using this cream I have noticed that my skin is softer and smoother. I love that it absorbs quickly and does not leave my face feeling greasy. You are told to use sparingly because it is a very rich cream, I found that 2 pumps is all I need to moisturize my skin. But seriously, my skin really does look better then it did prior to using Devera Naturals and I am not just saying this because I received a sample for review. In fact Girly Girl does sometimes receive products for review, that do not live up to their claims. Most of the time you won't hear about these as I try to only post about products I like. This cream is one of them!

Miracle Eyes is an eye cream that contains Edelweiss plant cells, Goji Berry extract, hyaluronic acid and marine extracts to smooth and firm around your eyes. It also contains green tea and cucumber to reduce puffiness and dark circles. Prior to starting this eye cream I noticed that the area under my eyes was becoming really dry. This eye cream does a great job of moisturizing the delicate area around your eyes and smoothing out creases. I found that I need to use a teeny amount of this stuff, when I use more I notice the area under my eyes starts to tingle a bit. However I was assured that this was normal, and when I only use a small dab as suggested, I do not have the same sensation. This little jar goes a long way! I really have noticed positive results from this eye cream, the dryness under my eyes has gone, the creases are less noticeable and the dark circles are getting lighter!

Devera Naturals are now available on Amazon as well as their website. Be sure to like them on Facebook as well.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Products Review

I love the John Frieda Frizz Ease line of products. My hair tends to get frizzy when the weather is humid and I also suffer from major flyaways. However I have found that when I use certain Frizz Ease products prior to blow drying my hair, my hair is left smooth, straight and bouncy. Recently I was sent a couple of Frizz Ease products for review.

The New Frizz Ease Daily Nourishment Shampoo and Conditioner which I loved, leaves my hair feeling soft and manageable. I love how light weight it is since I have a problem with products weighing down my really fine hair. This is a great everyday shampoo and conditioner for fine hair as it tames the flyaways while leaving your hair with some body.

The other product I received was Frizz Ease Dream Curls Air Dry Waves Styling Foam. Unfortunately my hair hates me, and as much as I would love for my hair to to look beach tousled with soft bouncy waves, these type of products never work for me. However my mom loves this stuff. She uses this foam on days when she hasn't the time or doesn't feel like blow drying her hair to create natural looking waves in her hair. It's funny because my mom also has fine hair but this stuff works great for her. Her hair has natural wave to it while mine is more on the straight side and I think this has a lot to do with why it doesn't work for me. Like I said, my hair hates me... According to my mom you simply put the foam in your hair while it's still wet. Scrunch your hair up a bit and let it air dry. What you are left with after it dries is natural wavy hair without the frizz. I did a bit of research on this product because it was driving me nuts that it didn't work for me. Apparently it works great for people that have all ready natural curls or wave in their hair. Leaving it bouncy and their curls free of the frizzies.

These products can be purchased at food, drug and mass retailers nationwide.
